Pielisjoki

The Pielisjoki River is the sixth most fast-flowing river in Finland and the biggest river that empties into Greater Saimaa. The river unites the two biggest lakes in North Karelia, Pielinen and Pyhäselkä. A ship lane goes up the Pielisjoki River from Joensuu to Lake Pielinen.

The Pielisjoki River was born when Uimaharju broke under a heavy load of masses of water of Lake Pielinen and as a result of land uplift. The banks are most beautiful upriver from Eno to Uimaharju. The region of Paukkajanvirta is especially beautiful.

The power plants of Kaltimo and Kuurna cut the River Pielisjoki. There are canals by both the power plants. The lock of Kaltimo is the biggest in Finland when it comes to the height of climb.
