1996-97 European Challenge Cup

The 1997 European Challenge Cup(then known as the European Shield) was a junior rugby union tournament held between September 1996 and January 1997. It was the inauguaral challenge cup tournament and was won by Bourgoin with a 18-9 victory over Castres in the final at the Stade de la Meditarenee in Beziers, France.

Twenty-four teams took part from England, France, Italy, Romania, Scotland and Wales, divided into 5 groups of 6. The quarter finals saw 7 of the 8 clubs coming from France(the only non-French club being Northampton Saints. The final was predictably an all-French affair, with Castres coming out victorious.
