2001 FINA Women's World Water Polo Championship

2001 FINA Women's World Water Polo Championship

The 2001 FINA Women's World Water Polo Championships was the fifth edition of the event, organised by the world's governing body in aquatics, the FINA. The tournament was held from July 18 to July 27, and incorporated in the 2001 World Aquatics Championships, held in Fukuoka, Japan. The draw for the water polo tournament took place on April 16, 2001 in Fukuoka.

Australia's world No 1 ranking got on the line when the women's water polo competition started at the Nishi Civic Pool. With only six teams competing at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, several top teams were not in attendance, including Hungary and world champion Italy, who recently fought out the European Championship final in Budapest, Hungary.
