Henry St John Tomlinson Evans(1905-1956)was the 5th Bishop of St John's in what was then known as Kaffraria and is now Mthatha [The Times, Thursday, Jul 26, 1956; pg. 12; Issue 53593; col B "Bishop St. J. T. Evans (Obituary)"] . Educated at Merchant Taylor’s and St John’s College, Oxford [“Who was Who 1897-1990” London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] he was ordained in 1928. From 1931 until 1941 he held posts in what is now Ghana, ending his time there as Archdeacon of Ashanti. A Chaplain to the Forces from 1942 to 1944 he was then appointed Director of Missions in "Southern Rhosesia" (now Zimbabwe) [”The Church in Southern Rghodesia” Evans,H. StJ. T: London SPCK, 1945] before elevation to the Episcopate in 1951. He died in post on on 25 July 1956.
