Sollman played for four years (by|2001–2004) for the
University of Notre Dame men's baseball team before being drafted by theOakland Athletics in the 32nd round of the by|2003 amateur draft, but did not sign. He was later drafted by theMilwaukee Brewers in the 10th round of the 2004 amateur draft. He began his career that year, playing for their Rookie League Helena Brewers. At the end of the season, he was named as the team's MVP. He advanced to the Class A-AdvancedBrevard County Manatees the following year, where he also played in by|2006. In 2007, Sollman was promoted to their Double-AHuntsville Stars . He finished the season with a league-leading .996 fielding percentage, and was voted the "Best Defensive First Baseman" by Southern League managers in a "Baseball America" survey. He was also selected for the league's mid-season All-Star team. In by|2008, Sollmann was promoted to the Triple-ANashville Sounds .
