John Thomas Glenn (
April 21 ,1845 –March 14 ,1899 ) [ [http://garrett.atlantahistorycenter.com/gdetail.php?idnum=31139 Franklin Garrett Necrology Database - Atlanta History Center] ] was themayor of Atlanta from 1889 to 1891, and the son of anotherAtlanta mayor,Luther Glenn .At the beginning of the
American Civil War he was attending theUniversity of Georgia where he received aBachelor of Arts degree just before the institution was shut down in September 1863.Then he served as a captain in the Confederate army.In his 40's he served as Atlanta's mayor and he died less than a decade later.Money from his estate was used to develop the
Glenn Building at Spring St and Marietta which was commissioned by theGeorge Fuller Company to coincide with theSpring Street Viaduct which they were building at the time. It was completed in 1923 and named for former mayor Glenn.References
