"Catalyst" is the primary science-journalism television series made by ABC1. Launched in 2001, it replaced "Quantum", which had ceased the previous year, and screens at 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays.

The show broadcasts stories on scientific themes, particularly significant recent developments and discoveries. It focusses primarily on stories relevant to Australia, but covers international developments as well. It attempts to convey information in a way that is not only accurate but also interesting and informative to the general population, often discussing the ethical, political, and other implications of scientific discoveries and research as well as the discoveries themselves.

Prime examples of "Catalyst" stories include "Corporate Psychopaths", [cite web |url=http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1360571.htm |title=Catalyst: Corporate Psychopaths - ABC TV Science |accessdate=2008-02-05 |format= |work=Catalyst] "The Truth About Vitamins", [cite web |url=http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1331225.htm |title=Catalyst: The Truth About Vitamins - ABC TV Science |accessdate=2008-02-05 |format= |work=Catalyst] and "Smell and Schizophrenia".
