Ard Scoil na nDéise

Ard Scoil na nDéise

The Ard Scoil na nDéise is an all-girl's secondary school in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Republic of Ireland. The school was established in 1990 as an amalgamation of Coláiste Muire, run by the Sisters of Mercy, and St. Joseph's Secondary School, run by the Presentation Sisters. Ard Scoil has over 400 pupils and 33 teachers.

Student Council + Cáirde Girls

The school has an active, successful student council, 'run by the students for the students.' Cáirde Girls is another prominent organisation in the school, which many would say is ahead of its time. According to the Ard Scoil website:

The Cáirde group is made up of Fifth and Sixth Year students who volunteer to help First Year students settle in as they start secondary school in Ard Scoil na nDéise. We attend three training courses in communication and mediation prior to the beginning of the new school year. The Cáirde group provides lunch time clubs including: Computers, Art, Hip-hop dancing, and any other clubs the First Year students show an interest in. We are role models, mentors and leaders. Each Cáirde Girl mentors three First Year students for the year, acting as a helper and a guide. We work with the First Year students throughout the year, ensuring a great start in Ard Scoil na nDéise.

Transition Year

The secondary school offers a celebrated Transition Year that is taken up by '90%' of students, which is notably high, when compared to other schools. The 2007/2008 class have already undergone such activities this year, e.g. bag packing for Darfur, undergoing work-experience, visiting the Dáil and a plethora of other activities.

Extracurricular

The school is also well known for its success at debating, and operates a popular Amnesty International club.
