There is an established Indian community in Madagascar since 1900 with the arrival of Gujaratis from Saurashtra. Initial arrivals were mainly mainly Muslim Khojas, Ismailis and Daoudi Bohras, who were followed by some Hindus.

Post nationalisation of private businesses in the 1970s, many were compelled to leave but sayed on and gradually built their businesses. It is generally believed that Indians control 50-60% of the country's economy. Hence they become an easy target of demonstrators whenever there is unrest.

See Hinduism in Madagascar for more information.
