Wisbech railway station (Upwell Tramway)

Wisbech railway station (Upwell Tramway)

Wisbech railway station was a station in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway. It served as the northern terminus of the line. It opened in 1883 and ran passenger services until 1927 when competition from motorised buses forced the line to become goods only. It carried on with freight services until it was finally closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching Axe. [ [http://www.lner.info/co/GER/wisbech/history.shtml The Wisbech and Upwell Railway: History ] ]

It should not be confused with Wisbech North railway station or Wisbech East railway station which were located respectively on the Great Eastern Railway and Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway lines through Wisbech. All three stations are now closed, and currently there are no rail services through Wisbech.

Althrough called a tram, in many ways it more closely resembled a conventional railway line. It was the inspiration for Toby the Tram Engine in the Reverend .W. Awdry's Railway Series, and the Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends television series that followed.
