STIRT

STIRT

STIRT is an abbreviation from Short Term Interest Rate Trading. The abbreviation is used in phrases like 'STIRT products' to denote a type of financial (banking and investment) products or 'STIRT knowledge' to denote skills and experience in the area of STIRT. However the more established abbreviation is STIR as in 'STIR trading' or 'STIR options trading'. See the article on 'STIR future' for an indepth discussion.

The abbreviation STIRT is sometimes incorrectly followed by the term trading thus becoming 'STIRT trading', which is a form of tautology. Such a mistake can be encountered in many job descriptions [http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=jobs+%22STIRT+trading%22&btnG=Search&meta= (see examples)] . This incorrect phrase is not seen in the broadsheets, e.g. a search of the website of [http://www.ft.com Financial Times] using [http://www.google.co.uk/search?num=100&hl=en&as_qdr=all&q=STIRT+site%3Aft.com&meta= Google] did not produce any related hits (as of March 2008). One example of a similar phrase can be found on the website of [http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:ENQek5fMZSwJ:db.riskwaters.com/public/showPage.html%3Fpage%3D447653+%22short-term+interest+rate+(stirt)+trading%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=uk FX Week] publication.
