- Poorna kumbham
The Poorna Kumbham( filled pot) is normally a water filled pot having a
coconut on top of it and decorated with leaves. Traditionally a brass pot is used but mud or copper pots are also common. This pot is called kalash or kumbham in Indian languages and is sometimes filled with rice than water. White or redthread is tied around its neck or all around its body in an intricate diamond-shaped pattern.Mango leaves are placed at the mouth of this kalash in a circular decorative pattern. Sometimes a small clean cloth is wrapped around the coconut that is placed above the kumbham. In this way the water or rice filled pot is known as Poornakumbham and it is believed to be divine and sacred when all the above things are done with appropriate mantras.A kalash is placed with due rituals on all important occasions like the wedding, traditional house warming (gruhapravesham), daily worship etc. It is placed near the entrance as a sign of welcome. It is also used in a traditional manner while receiving holy personages.
