Attorney General of Pakistan
- Attorney General of Pakistan
The Attorney General of Pakistan is appointed under Article 100 of the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Deputy Attorney General of Pakistan appointed under the Central Law Officers Ordinance, 1970. The Attorney General is the chief legal advisor of the government and serves at the pleasure of the President of Pakistan or till his/her resignation. The current Attorney General is Senator Latif Khosa, who was appointed by the PPP-led government in August 2008, the day President Pervez Musharraf and the former Attorney General Malik Mohammad Qayyum resigned.
Controversially in Pakistan the Attorney General has the right to private practice. It is custom that despite this permission (first granted under General Zia-ul Haq's tenure) most do not excercise this right, however, it is acceptable to do do so for briefs accepted before they assumed office which they are bound to complete and cannot be handed over to another lawyer because of the stage of litigation reached. However, Sharifuddin Pirzada a former three time Attorney General and the current holder of the office Malik Qayyum are conspicuous for their use of this right and accepting private briefs even after assuming office which is viewed by manyFact|date=June 2008 as unethical and a conflict of interest. It is pertinent to note that the last three Attorney Generals before the current holder did not make use of their right of private practice.
