On
June 3 ,1999 , at approximately 5:15 in the morning, Floyd entered anAlbertson's supermarket inLas Vegas, Nevada and opened fire on random individuals within the store with ashotgun . Wearing Marine Corps camouflage and with a shaved head, Floyd began to pick out his victims at will in a calm, collected manner, shootingThomas Darnell in the back twice, killing him. Immediately after, Floyd also killed Carlos Chuck Leos and Dennis Troy Sargeant. Floyd then encounteredZachary T. Emenegger , who fled Floyd when he saw the gunman pointing the shotgun in his general direction. Diving under a produce table, Emenegger was able to avoid Floyd's deadly gunfire for roughly 15 seconds before succumbing to gunshots from Floyd's shotgun which punctured both of his lungs and deflated them.Floyd then shot Emenegger again before he began to search the store for other victims. He then found Lucille Alice Tarantino in the rear of the store, and shot her in the head at point-blank range, killing her. Floyd then walked back to Emenegger, who pretended to be dead and lifeless. Floyd whispered "yeah, you're dead" to Emenegger, and then proceeded to exit the store. In total, Floyd had shot seven shotgun shells, killing four people and critically wounding another.
Arrest
Floyd exited the supermarket's north doors to meet the
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police . Without exchanging any gunfire, Floyd ran back into the supermarket and then proceeded to exit the west doors of the supermarket, in hopes of avoiding the police outside. However, the west exit of the supermarket had also been surrounded by Las Vegas police. After noticing that the entire complex had been surrounded by officers, Floyd proceeded to threaten to kill himself by pointing the shotgun to his head, but after a fifteen minute standoff, police convinced Floyd to not take his own life, and immediately after was arrested on charges of murder after confessing that he had killed all of the people inside the supermarket.Trial
After pleading guilty, Floyd went to trial under the judgment of a Nevada state jury. The jury then delivered the maximum verdict: four consecutive death penalties [ [http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jul-22-Sat-2000/news/14017426.html LAS VEGAS RJ:NEWS: Jurors decide Floyd must pay with ] ] .
