The Lodge sits on the Greensand Ridge, overlooking the
River Ivel valley. AnIron Age hill-fort was built on the site around 8000 BC. 'Sandy Warren' later became an valuable source of rabbits.Around 1851, the 'Swiss Cottage' (which now serves as the reserve's visitor centre and shop) was built for Captain William Peel. When he died, the estate passed to his brother,
Arthur Wellesley Peel , who built the house known as 'The Lodge'.In 1934, the house was sold to
Sir Malcolm Stewart and the formal gardens were established. [RSPB. A history of Sandy Lodge leaflet, 2007 (reference number 000-1821-06-07)] TheRSPB has had its headquarters at The Lodge since 1961. [ [http://www.rspb.org.uk/about/history/milestones.asp RSPB 'about us' webpage] ]References
