The Hollybush, Stockton Brook

The Hollybush at Stockton Brook, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, is situated adjacent to the Caldon branch of the Trent & Mersey canal, bridge no.38, approximately 5 miles from Hanley just off the A53 Leek road.

'The Holly Bush' was originally owned by John Joules Brewery of Stone, and in 1911, Mr Jesse Jodrell replaced Mr S Podmore as the tenant. With a bowling green and tennis court it was the hub of village life.

Provisions were delivered by Boyce Adams of Hanley by horse and cart until the late 1940's. After the war beer was rationed, and at weekends, before opening time, people would queue stretching to the main Leek Road.

In 1949 Jesse Jodrell retired and was succeeded by John Jodrell, his son, who died in 1967 to be succeeded by his wife Elizabeth Jodrell who retired in 1971.

Mr and Mrs J McKenna from Stone took over as tenant until 1977 and were succeeded by Mr and Mrs Barry Wood. In 1980 they altered the dining area into a restaurant.

Mr and Mrs Wood left in 1990 and The Hollybush became a Bass managed house. This continued as 'A Harvester' from 1997 until 2005.
