Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) awarded a Los Angeles franchise to
Jerry Buss on June 24, 1982. Buss had purchased thePhiladelphia Fever and wanted to move it to southern California. MISL approved and the team was renamed the Lazers. As Buss also owned theLos Angeles Lakers of theNational Basketball Association , he chose the name Lazers for his soccer team both as a pun on the scientific acronymLASER and to note their connection to the Lakers.The Lazers folded in June 1989.
