William Charles Redfield

William Charles Redfield (March 26, 1789 - 1857), born in Middletown, Connecticut [ [http://www.cosmovisions.com/Redfield.htm Imago Mundi - William Redfield ] ] , was one of the founders and the first President of the AAAS formed in 1848 [ [http://archives.aaas.org/people.php?p_id=53 AAAS - The World's Largest General Scientific Society ] ] [ [http://home.earthlink.net/~claelliott/chron1840.htm Chronology of Science in the United States 1840-1849 ] ]

William Charles Redfield is known in meteorology for his observation of the directionality of winds in hurricanes [ [http://home.earthlink.net/~claelliott/chron1830.htm Chronology of Science in the United States ] ] (being among the first to propose that hurricanes are large circular vortexes [ [http://www.hurricaneville.com/1821_hurricane.htm] ] , though John Farrar had made similar observations six years earlier), though his interests were varied and influential.
