New Zealand art historian .Bieringa held the position of Director at the Manawatu Art gallery from 1971 until 1979, when he was appointed as Director of the
National Art Gallery of New Zealand . He held this position for twenty years until 1999. He is a champion ofphotography in New Zealand , promoting it on a national level with major exhibitions at the National Art Gallery during his directorship, including NZ surveys and retrospectives of the photography ofPeter Black ,Barbara Kruger ,Cindy Sherman andRichard Misrach .
