He got his start in the automotive industry via his father's business, Ross Roy Communications. Ross Roy Communications was a merchandising and advertising agency in Detroit during its heydays from approximately 1940 to 1980, and was known primarily for its work in dealer and merchandising programs for Chrysler Corporation, Kmart, Kelly Services, and others. The firm was later sold and absorbed into a series of national advertising agencies, which included BBDO.
Roy later worked as an automotive catalog copywriter for D'Arcy McManus Masius, on the Pontiac account. He began his writing career in journalism in 2004 with a series of articles published by
