Stanley Street, Montreal

Stanley Street (officially rue Stanley) is a street located in downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

History

From the 1920s until the 1970s, the street had been the centre of Montreal's gay village, now located further east. [cite web |url=http://www.go-montreal.com/areas_village.htm |title=The Village Comes Out: A Quick History |accessdate=2008-03-28 |author=Andrea Zanin |work=Go-Montreal.com] Open since 1974 and still operating from its basement location on Stanley Street, the gay bar Le Mystique was raided by police in 1976, leading to riots.
