Barry B. Levine (born 1941) is an American academic and founding professor of
Sociology at theFlorida International University .Academic career
Levine received his B.A. in 1961 from the
University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D in 1973 from theNew School for Social Research . He held a teaching position at theUniversity of Puerto Rico for seven years before leaving for FIU in 1972. He is well-liked by his students because of his charismatic lecture style and witty sense of humor, as well as his regard for SociologistMax Weber .In 1969, he cofounded and edited "Caribbean Review", an English-language quarterly journal focused on the culture and ideals of the
Caribbean ,Latin America and theiremigrant groups.He is perhaps best known for penning "Benjy Lopez" which received much acclaim; most recently in a February, 2008, "Newsweek" article written by art historian
