HiCy

HiCy

HiCy (high-dose cyclophosphamide) is an experimental procedure used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, notably multiple sclerosis. The treatment relies on the differential susceptibility of blood cells to cyclophosphamide: while progenitors are relatively insensitive to the chemical, differentiated blood cells are susceptible. The procedure obliterates the immune system, allowing the blood cell progenitors to repopulate. cite web |url=http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/hmn/W08/feature1.cfm |title=Hopkins Medicine Magazine - The Alfredo Story |accessdate=2008-03-23 |author= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |format= |work= |publisher= |pages= |language= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote=] For weeks following the treatment, individuals are immunocompromised.
