- Brandon Herman
Brandon Herman (born 1983,
Hillsborough, CA ) is a young, contemporary artist based inLos Angeles , CA who works primarily inphotography but, in recent exhibitions, has begun to showsculpture ,painting andvideo work as well.Herman's creative process involves diligently staged events, often preceded by months of research on a topic of interest, and then scripted, cast and executed with chosen participants. In 2007 he orchestrated a yearlong project inspired by the high profile abductions of
Polly Klaas (in the 90s) andPatricia Hearst (in the 70s). The pieces that showed in the resulting exhibition explore the psychological intricacies of the experience of being abducted but often only hint at the elaborate and experiential method of investigation prior. Dark and erotic undertones are pervasive in the work.Herman's most recent sculptural piece is a 6' tall cast fiberglass cartoon cat head, a three dimensional translation of an image he has tattooed on his leg. At a glance the piece is reminiscent of many cartoon cats throughout the history of
television , but at closer inspection is more a hybrid of all than a commitment to any specific character, illuminating the unreliable and untrustworthy nature of visual memory. Within the context of the exhibition, it begs the question, what was the last cartoonPolly Klaas might have watched before being kidnapped and murdered?Noteworthy recent exhibitions include a solo show entitled 'My Vacation With A Kidnapper' at Envoy Gallery (New York, NY) and inclusion in a group show at Galerie Griesmar et Tamer (Paris). Brandon is a graduate of
Rhode Island School of Design , and his work has been featured in "Anthem", "Artforum ", "Celeste", "Dazed and Confused", "Eyemazing", "Flaunt ", "H Magazine", "NY Arts Magazine", "Nylon", "Soma", "Tokion ", "V Magazine", and "Vice".External links
