He was originally signed by the Washington Senators in 1940, but was released in 1941 without playing a single game for them. In 1947, thePittsburgh Pirates signed Merson as afree agent , and he made his debut with Pittsburgh in 1951. He played 111 of 154 games in 1952, batting .246 with fivehome run s and thirty-eightruns batted in . After the 1952 season, theBoston Red Sox took Merson in theRule 5 draft .
