Eagle High School in his hometown Eagle, Idaho. He also lettered in Basketball. Putzier made two free throws to win the district championship game against Eagle High's rivals, Centennial High.College career

Boise State University and was an English Major and a letterman in football. In football, he finished his college career with 128 receptions for 2050 yards(16.01 yards per reception avg.) and 19 touchdowns. As a senior, he played tight end and was a first team All Western Athletic Conference selection. In Boise State University's 41-10 victory against Tulsa University that year, he caught 8 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns. As a junior, he played wide receiver, and was an All-big West Conference Honorable Mention selection and finished the season with 39 receptions for 514 yards (13.18 yards per reception avg.) and two touchdowns. As a sophomore, he played wide receiver and was a second team All-Big West Conference selection.
