Bransby Lewis Key (1838-1901)was the 2nd Bishop of St John's in what was then known as Kaffraria and is now Mthatha [”Scottish Episcopal Clergy, 1689-2000” Bertie, D.M: Edinburgh T & T Clark ISBN 0567087468] . Born into a medical family [His father was an eminent surgeon The Times, Monday, Jan 14, 1901; pg. 4; Issue 36351; col E "Obituary. The Bishop Of St. John's Kaffraria" ] he was educated at "Kensington Grammar School" and St Augustine's College, Canterbury [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] . Ordained Deacon in 1864 and Priest a year later his first post was as a Missionary in the Transkei [ [http://www.aberdeen.anglican.org/visit%20to%20south%20africa.htm Diocese History] ] . After 19 years he was appointed Coadjutor bishop of the Diocese , and four years later (when Bishop Callaway retired) he took full control of the See.
