Tung Kula Rong Hai

Tung Kula Rong Hai ( _th. ทุ่งกุลาร้องไห้ ) is a large plateau in Northeastern Thailand. Its area has size around 2 million rais (or 3200 sq. km.).It is located in Surin, Maha Sarakham, Buriram, Sisaket, and Roi et.Its name is literally translated to "plateau of crying kula".Legend has it that Kulas, minorities from Mottama, Myanmar, have traveled through this plateau.Kula was then well-known for their endurance and toughness. They have spent several days traveling without passing by any village and suffered from dehydration. The surrounding has no tree to provide shading. It was only grass field and dry sand.Trekking through this area was very difficult. The dry land and scarceness of water supply makes tough Kulas exhausted and then cry.Hence, the land takes its name from this story.

Historically, Tung Kula Rong Hai had suffered desert-like condition during dry season and flooding during rainy season.Soil also had salinity problem. However, the area has been treated and nowadays the plateau becomes famous rice producing area of Thailand.
