Born in 1924 at
Gauripur inDhubri District , Dutta Choudhury pursued his graduation fromCarmichael College ,Rangpur (now inBangladesh ). He obtained his post-graduation inPure Mathematics fromCalcutta University in 1946. After finishing post-graduation withfirst class andsilver medal , he joinedCotton College ,Guwahati as alecturer inMathematics . Subsequently, he became acontractor , asub-editor with theAssam Tribune and assistantmanager in atea estate for some time and finally he restarted his teachingcareer in theAssam Engineering College ,Guwahati in 1957 as alecturer . And he retired in 1982 as aprofessor inmathematics . He died on February 29, 2008 at ahospital inGuwahati .Literary works
Dutta Choudhury started
writing at the age of 40 and actually hisliterary journey begun based on some provocative comments and ridicules that he faced at his early years as alecturer at theAssam Engineering College for hisBengali pronunciation and later he proved that he was not apart from what is regarded as "Assamese ", and virtually he placedDhubri in theliterary map ofAssam . Dutta Choudhury’s majorliterary works are "Madhupur aru Tarangini", "Agomonir Ghat", "Anahatguri", "Abichinna", "Prachir", "Godhuli and Anusandhan" (allnovels ) and "Baastab", "Beer Sainik", "Samudrateer", "Tarua Kadam", "Pratiksha", "Uttaran", "Mezaz", "Sheelabhadrar Kuria Galpa", "Nirbachita Galpa", "Madhupurar Madhukar", "Anya ek Madhupur", "Uttar Nai", "Dayitya aru Anyanya Galpa", "Biswas aru Anyanya Galpa", "Lagaria" and several othercollections ofshort stories . Many of his literary works have been translated intoHindi ,Bengali , Punjabi,Telugu andOriya by theNational Book Trust , theSahitya Akademi and theBharatiya Jnanpith . "Smriticharan" is hisautobiography which is full of fascinating aspects of his life.
Awards and Honours
Dutta Choudhury was honoured with the
Sahitya Akademi award in 1994 for hisshort stories "Madhupur Bahudur", the Assam Valley literaryaward in 2001, the Bharatiya Bhasa Parishadaward in 1990 and the Assam Publication Boardaward in the same year.References
