Irving Point

Irving Point

Irving Point (coord|56|43|S|27|7|W|) is a point forming the east extremity of Visokoi Island in the South Sandwich Islands. Discovered and first roughly charted in 1819 by a Russian expedition under Bellingshausen. It was named "Penguin Point", because of a rookery there, by DI personnel following their survey in 1930, but that name has been changed because it is already in use for other features. Irving Point was recommended by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1953 and is for Lieutenant Commander J. Irving, Royal Navy, who made sketches of the South Sandwich Islands from the "Discovery II" in 1930.
