Cerefolin

Cerefolin

Cerefolin is a prescription medication made by Pamlab that contains 5.6 mg of folic acid as L-methylfolate, 2 mg of vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin and 600 mg of N-acetylcysteine (NAC). It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment or prevention of vitamin deficiencies, but is used off-label to treat homocystinemia and homocystinuria. Some health care providers believe that reducing blood levels of homocysteine will reduce risks of certain cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and stroke.[citation needed] It is also being prescribed off-label by psychiatrists as an SSRI augmentor based on the perceived benefits of folate augmentation.[citation needed]
