FitzAlan is a Scottish surname ultimately of Breton people origin. The family originated in Brittany, in France, and shares common ancestry with the Stewarts. One wing of William the Conqueror's army in 1066 was Breton. The Scottish nameholders held an earldom of Arundel during the period 1267 - 1580. Variants include Fitz-Alan, Fitzalan, Fitzallen, Fitz Alan, as well as the locational variants Arundel and Arundell because of the earldom.
