The 2001 Ansett Australia Cup was contested by all sixteen clubs of the Australian Football League. It ran for five weeks. The competition took a round-robin format, with all clubs divided into four groups of four. In the group stages, the AFL BL and AFL PA finished top of their respective groups and beat AFL Haw and (unknown team) respectively to meet in the Grand Final. AFL PA took out their first title with a convinving 85-point thumping of the AFL BL.

The AFL BL (the eventual regular season premiers) were playing in its first grand final of any kind (since the merger with AFL Fit), while AFL PA were playing in their second pre-season grand final going down to AFL Haw back in 1999.
