W. D. Lowe High School

W. D. Lowe High School

W. D. Lowe Secondary School (also known as Lowe High School and Lowe Tech School ) was a public secondary school located in downtown Windsor, Ontario from 1921 until 1999.

History

The school began as Walkerville Technical School and then was renamed to W. D. Lowe, after a former principal of the school.

Closure

W. D. Lowe Secondary School (originally Walkerville Technical School), located on Giles Boulevard at Parent, closed in June, 1999 after 78 years. When Lowe's first Grade 13 class wrote the Ontario Departmentals in 1966, it received the highest average of all secondary schools in Windsor.

Technical education

The school had 25 shops, including three for cars.

Sports

The school had several championships.

John Murray was a coach of the 1940s and 1950s who led the students to several championships in basketball and football.

Co-ed in 1974

For most of its early years, Lowe was an all-male school but went co-ed in 1974 when students from nearby J. C. Patterson Collegiate Institute were transferred there prior to its demolition.

Dwindling enrollment

In the 1960s, enrollment was over 1600 students, but by the end of the 1990s, it had dwindled considerably.

Temporary housing for Campbell students in 2008

John Campbell Public School students have temporarily relocated to the former W. D. Lowe Secondary School while their primary school is being rebuilt, completion is expected in Spring 2009.
