George Bennet Chambers (born early 1881 in
Ealing ,London ) was an Englishvicar ,social activist andauthor (writing as GB Chambers). Following a long career in theChurch of England , he became the vicar of Carbrooke Church inNorfolk . An expert onfolk music (in particular,Plainsong [Chambers, G.B (1956) "Folksong, Plainsong", Merlin Press: London ISBN 0850363500] ), he was also well known for hisleft-wing social and political views, which were evident in his well publicised commission of acrucifix [http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,800024,00.html] incorporatinghammer and sickle iconography .Early career
Chambers spent some time in his youth as a
Benedictine monk , based atCaldey Island inPembrokeshire [See 1901 Census: http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/] . After changingdenomination , he took successive roles in theEast End of London andSouth Africa working with theChurch of England . He was deaconed in 1906, priested in 1907, and appointed Vicar of Carbrooke Church in 1927, where he remained until 1955. Whilst at Carbooke he also becameRector ofOvington, Norfolk in 1952.Wider Interests

Cancer Research UK ). A friend of several prominent left wing figures inEngland and descendent of the jurist Sir Robert Chambers, he was married in 1921 to Aline Robinson (daughter ofLouis Robinson ) and had four children.ee also
