The Puerto del Escudo (Pass of the Shield) is a
mountain pass at 1,011meter selevation located in thevalley ofLuena , to theeast of theSierra del Escudo mountain range and on the boundary betweenCantabria and Castile andBurgos inSpain . In it the source of the Magdalena orLuena River . It has been the one of the main access routes from the coast to the interiorplateau crossing theCantabrian Mountains . At the moment theN-623 highway runs over it and is well-known for its steep inclines on its Cantabrian slope that can be up to 15%, causing a difficult transit forheavy vehicle s. This characteristic and itsaltitude result in the relatively frequent closing of the pass when there is heavysnow in thewinter .
