- Stan Sulzmann
Stanley Ernest Sulzmann (b. November 30, 1948,
London ) is an Englishjazz saxophonist.Sulzmann began on saxophone at age 13 and played in
Bill Ashton 's London Youth Jazz Orchestra, later theNational Youth Jazz Orchestra . He studied at theRoyal Academy of Music from 1969-1972. In the 1970s he played with theClarke-Boland Big Band (1971),Mike Gibbs (1971), John Taylor andKenny Wheeler ,Volker Kriegel ,Eberhard Weber ,Zbigniew Seifert (1973),Phil Woods (1978),Clark Terry (1978), andGordon Beck . In the 1980s he worked withGil Evans , (1983), theEuropean Jazz Ensemble (1983), theHilversum Radio Orchestra , theHamburg -basedNDR Big Band , and theLondon Jazz Orchestra . Collaborations in the 1990s include withAllan Botschinsky , David Murray (1997),Paul Clarvis (1998), andBruno Castellucci (1998). Television audiences around the world have heard him as the saxophone soloist in the theme song to the BBC's "Poirot", composed by Christopher Gunning. The theme song is used in the earlier episodes; starting with "Death on the Nile", Gunning was instructed to not use the theme anymore.Sulzmann has held teaching positions at the
Guildhall School of Music , theRoyal Academy of Music , andTrinity College of Music .He is married with 2 sons: Matthew Sulzmann and Liam Sulzmann
