- Bertrand de Saint-Martin
Bertrand de Saint-Martin (d.
1275 or1277 ) was a French cardinal.He entered the Order of
Benedictines long before1238 . In1248 he was electedbishop of Fréjus . In1264 he was transferred to thesee of Avignon , and in1266 to the metropolitansee of Arles .Pope Gregory X created himCardinal-Bishop of Sabina onJune 3 ,1273 . He participated in theSecond Council of Lyon (1274 ).Date of his death is uncertain. "Annuaire Pontifical Catholique 1929", p. 127, indicates that he died at
Lyon onMarch 28 ,1275 , and shortly thereafter was succeeded in the see of Sabina by Giovanni Visconti, nephew of Gregory X. On the other hand,Konrad Eubel , "Hierarchia Catholica Medii Aevi", vol I, p. 9 and 38, claims that he participated in the conclaves that electedInnocent V andJohn XXI in1276 and died in1277 , before the election ofNicholas III (November 25 , 1277).Joseph Hyacinthe Albanés says that he died onMarch 29 , 1277. There are also sources which indicate that he died during the celebration of the Second Council of Lyon in 1274, but the last papal bull signed by him is datedMarch 23 , 1275.He may have become
dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals in September 1276.External links
