Hart House Review

"Hart House Review" (HHR) is a Canadian literary magazine managed by student members of Hart House at the University of Toronto and published by Coach House Press. The magazine is best known for prose, poetry and photography contributed by emerging writers and artists in Canada.

History

The inaugural issue was published in 1992. The "Hart House Review" has since developed into a leading literary venue for the University of Toronto community. It publishes the winners of the Hart House literary, poetry, drama and photography contests as well as the E. J. Pratt Poetry Prize winner. "HHR" also accepts direct submissions for publication under these categories. Various forms of art contributions also continue to be accepted.

The magazine today

Receiving hundreds of submissions, the competition confronting writers and artist looking to get published in HHR is intense. Nevertheless, HHR has modestly expanded the annual volume of published pieces, while giving fair consideration to previously unpublished faces(either in the magazine or elsewhere). HHR has always sought eclectic voices, and has so not been shy to nurture diverse talents from Canada’s burgeoning socio-cultural expanse. The editorial team also solicits works from select contributors within and outside of the University of Toronto community. The Editor/Editor-in-Chief is generally recruited from within the review's team after having served as Assistant Editor. Editors often do not serve for more than a year's term at the helm of the review's board though there is no rule nor expectation for them to do so. Receiving assistance exclusively from Hart House the magazine operates on a modest budget which has not been immune to changes in it's sponsor's fiscal health. Still, the volunteer editorial team has been well known to be quite resourceful in elevating the magazine profile over the years despite these constraints. The absence of a dedicated office space is a case in point. HHR is also freely distributed with a substantial share of the resources being utilized for this purpose. The magazine's content can also be fully accessed online, however the comprehensive online archiving of past editions is still process.

Events

HHR also regularly organizes literary events which feature established and emerging members of the writing and publishing world. In addition to this, HHR's annual launch is a much anticipated event among the University of Toronto community and outside observers on the lookout for fresh talent from this institution. At this reception, which is widely attended, contest winners are felicitated, feature contributors share their thoughts or perform a reading, and the published artists have their works displayed.
