Krishnashastri Chiplunkar

Krishnashastri Chiplunkar

Krishnashastri Chiplunkar (1824-1878) was a social activist who taught in educational institutes to bring about social awakening. He was also a writer and an excellent translator of Sanskrit texts into Marathi. He had translated Jagannath Pandit's 'Karunavilas' in Marathi.

He was probably related to Vishnushastri Chiplunkar (1850-1882), who was a collaborator with Tilak and Agarkar as social activist. Vishnushastri was also instrumental in starting an educational institute: Deccan Education Society.

He started translating Arabian Nights into Marathi in 1861. Vishnushastri Chiplunkar and Hari Krishna Damle continued the work after Krishnashari's death, and the book was published in 1890.
