"Cultural and visual flux at early historical Bagh in central India" is a book written by Dr Archana Verma, published in 2007. The basis of the book is a study done by the author of the region around the early historical Buddhist monastery in Bagh Caves, in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India; a special focus is given to the local cave art. The author argues that the visual art represents the religious assimilation by Buddhism, an approach caused by the process of transformation through three successive phases.

Overview

The work makes insightful use of the archaeological material from the region, comprising of epigraphical records, excavation reports and the works of art and architecture from Bagh. This research has three major components:
# A study of the historical geography of the region in which Bagh is located
# The process of socio-religious and political transformations in the region as evident from the Sanskrit copper plates found in the early 1990s from Bagh
# A study of the art and architecture of the monastery in the light of the socio-religious profile of the region. This research throws important light on the processes of change taking place in the micro-region of the chiefdom of Valkha in which Bagh was located and the ways in which they influenced the creation of Buddhist art in this region. It also shows the new ways in which works of art can be studied.
