Piedmontese Union

Piedmontese Union

Piedmontese Union ("Union Piemontèisa", UP) was a regionalist Italian political party active in Piedmont.

It was founded in 1981 and its long-standing leader was Roberto Gremmo. In 1987 the party suffered the split by the followers of Gipo Farassino, who wanted to make an alliance with Lega Lombarda of Umberto Bossi. Farassino set up a new regionalist party named Autonomist Piedmont (PA).

In 1989-1991 Gremmo refused to participate to the founding process of Lega Nord and, since then, the party begun its decline. In the 2001 regional election, UP took 2.3% of the votes and elected one regional deputy, Gremmo hinself, while PA of Farassino took 5.1% and two regional deputies.

For the 1992 general election, Gremmo transformed the party into the Piedmont Alpine League ("Lega Alpina Piemont") in alliance with the Lombard Alpine League. The party has since then disappeared.
