G T Madkholkar

Gajanan Tryambak Madkholkar was a Marathi novelist.

Atre, Phadke, Khandekar and Madkholkar were the major Marathi novelists who made their mark starting from 1930s. Out of these, Madkholkar was the sole representative of Vidarbha region; the other three had their base in Mumbai-Pune-Kolhapur corridor in western Maharashtra.

He was also a political activist and founded the newspaper Tarun Bharat in Nagpur. The paper's press in Mahal area was burnt after Gandhiji's assassination in 1948. Later the press moved to Ramdaspeth area.

'Bhaurao' (or Bhausaheb) Madkholkar campaigned for Vidarbha's inclusion in the state of Maharashtra when Indian states were organized on the basis of language.

Madkholkar delighted in gossip and scurrilous talk. He used to say that Khandekar was a puritan, whereas he and Phadke were bohemians.

Madkholkar was sympathetic to Hindutva, and after him RSS captured the paper with its devoted members, like Maa Go Vaidya and Rambhau Tupkari, occupying important positions. Madkholkar was also a trenchant critic of Nehru. But he had contacts in all political parties and his word was much respected among politicians.

Madkholkar's son, Chandrashekhar, was an advocate, political activist, and a writer.
