John Betsch (b. October 8, 1945,
Jacksonville, Florida ) is an Americanfree jazz drummer.Betsch began on percussion at age nine, and attended
Fisk University ,Berklee College of Music and theUniversity of Massachusetts-Amherst . After playing in organ trios, he released an album as a leader, "Earth Blossom", in 1975. That year he moved toNew York City , where he played withMarion Brown ,Paul Jeffrey ,Max Roach ,Jeanne Lee andHenry Threadgill . Between 1977 and 1979 he joinedAbdullah Ibrahim 's ensemble, and from 1980 to 1982 he was withArchie Shepp 's quartet. Following this he was a member of quartets led byMarty Cook .Since 1985 he has lived in Europe, playing with
Jim Pepper andMal Waldron as well as in a band with his wife, French pianistClaudine François . In the 1990s he played in a group withSteve Lacy , and withÖzay Fecht and in a trio withElvira Plenar andPeter Kowald . He has done other recordings withThomas Chapin ,Marilyn Crispell ,Klaus König ,Billy Bang ,Sathima Benjamin ,Uli Lenz andSimon Nabatov .References
