- Venkatesh Madgulkar
Venkatesh Madgulkar (1927-2001) was one of the most popular and well-known Marathi writers of his time. He became well-known mainly for his realistic writings about village life in a part of southern Maharashtra called MaaN-desh. These writings about Maandesh are set in a period of 15 to 20 years before and after India's Independence.
He was lovingly called Tatya (“old man”, or “grand old man” in Marathi) by his admirers, friends and family members. His daughter Dnyanada Naik was involved with the popular children's magazine 'Kishor'.
Venkatesh was the younger brother of the famous poet
G D Madgulkar . Along with Pu Bha Bhave, Gangadhar Gadgil and Arvind Gokhale, Venkatesh is considered to have ushered in an era of Modern Short Story in Marathi. His novel Bangarwadi has been made into a film. He was also called Colonel Bahadur, perhaps due to his fondness for hunting.Ga Di Madgulkar was sometimes referred to as 'Thoralii Paatii' (elder one) and Vyankatesh as 'dhaakaTii pati' (the younger one). Both brothers became president of Marathi Sahitya Sammelan. Venkatesh chaired Marathi Sahitya Sammelan when it was held in Ambejogai in 1980s.
