Birdlip

Birdlip

Birdlip is a small village in Gloucestershire, England, at co-ordinates 51.82N 02.11W, OS Grid Reference SO9214. It lies seven miles south of Cheltenham, ten miles east of Gloucester and eight miles north-east of Stroud.

Birdlip is located on The Cotswold Way, a National Trail running along the edge of The Cotswolds AONB. The view from the edge of Birdlip Woods takes in cities from Gloucester as far as Birmingham.

Birdlip is best known for the discovery of some fine pre-roman bronze art, including the famous Birdlip Mirror, which dates from around 50AD.

Although the village was once on the main Gloucester to Cirencester road, the turnpiking of the A417 has moved it off the main route, and it is now home only to approximately 150 people, a primary school and a hotel/pub, the Royal George Hotel.
