The Hollow Crown

The Hollow Crown

"The Hollow Crown" was a two-part, black-and-white television special which presented, in dramatic form, speeches, documents, gossip and music, associated with the British monarchy from William the Conqueror up to Queen Victoria, devised and directed by John Barton and broadcast in 1961. A videotape of this broadcast can be seen at The Paley Center for Media in New York City.

The work has also been produced for the stage several times. According to Ian Richardson "every member of the [Royal Shakespeare Company - present, past , or passed-on - has participated in it at one time or another".

Its most recent production was in Toronto, in January 2004, at the Princess of Wales Theatre, starring Vanessa Redgrave, Donald Sinden, Ian Richardson and Alan Howard.
