The Japanese 20st Army was formed on
10 September 1941 under theKwantung Army inHeilongjiang province in northernManchukuo as agarrison andborder patrol force. It came under the administrative control of theJapanese First Area Army on4 July 1942 . On19 October 1944 , it was transferred tocentral China and came under the command of theJapanese Sixth Area Army to provide a garrison force for areas left under defended by the movement of troops further south inOperation Ichi-Go . After thesurrender of Japan , it came under control of theKuomingtang government of theRepublic of China and was assigned to the maintenance of public order under it was officially disbanded on15 July 1946 , without ever having seen combat.List of Commanders
