Robert Earl Wells (born
December 28 1927 ) was ageneral authority ofThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1976 to 1997.Wells was born in Las Vegas,
Nevada . ["2008 Deseret Morning News Church Almanac" (Salt Lake City, Utah: Deseret Morning News, 2007), p. 92.] He grew up inLogandale, Nevada . As a young man, Wells was a missionary for the LDS Church inArgentina . He then served in theUnited States Navy . Following this he earned a degree in accounting fromBrigham Young University . South America . He lived inParaguay ,Ecuador ,Argentina ,Brazil andUruguay .Wells wife Meryl died in a plane crash. About two years latter he married Helen Walser.
From 1968 to 1971 Wells was president of the
Mexico Monterrey Mission of the LDS Church. From 1971 to 1976 he worked for the church's central purchasing department. Prior to his call as a general authority, Wells had served as a Regional Representative in severalLatin America n countries. In 1976, he became a member of theFirst Quorum of the Seventy , and held this position until 1997, when he was made anemeritus general authority. From 1998 to 2001, Wells was the president of theSantiago Chile Temple of the LDS Church.
