Pheeroan akLaff (b. January 27, 1955) is an American
jazz drummer.He began playing in his hometown Detroit, and Ann Arbor MI. with Travis Biggs. He moved to New Haven CT. and formed the DejaVu band with Dwight Andrews.His first major jazz concert was with
Bill Baron in 1975, and following this he played withLeo Smith 's New Dalta Ahkri. He has had a longstanding association withOliver Lake , whom he has worked with on several projects including thereggae ensembleJump Up . akLaff has also worked withHenry Threadgill ,Yosuke Yamashita ,Jay Hoggard ,Sonny Sharrock ,Anthony Davis ,James Newton ,Jerome Harris ,Geri Allen ,Reggie Workman ,Andrew Hill ,Ray Anderson ,Baikida Carroll ,Marty Ehrlich ,Mal Waldron ,Don Byron ,Cecil Taylor , David Murray,Dewey Redman ,Nat Adderly Jr. , Air,George Adams ,Sonny Sharrock ,Myra Melford ,Steve Lehman ,Karen Borca , andMichael Gregory Jackson .
